フィッシャーマン セーター（漁師たちの防寒服）の原型とも言われているガンジーセーターは、イギリスとフランスの間にあるガンジー島で生まれたことから、この名が付いたと言われています。16世紀には存在していたとされ、イギリスで最も古い歴史のあるセーターと言われています。エリザベス1世やスコットランドのメアリー王女といったロイヤルファミリーにも愛され、19世紀にはイギリス海軍の制服にも採用されていました。ガンジーセーターの特徴は、 極寒の冬の海でも着られるよう保温力と耐久性を考えて作られていた為、ウール100％で非常に編み目が詰まっているのが特徴です。着古して傷んだら、ほどいて編み直され、長年着られていました。
